This novel is a great "comfort read." The author is familiar with the anxieties that beset teenage girls, particularly the conflicting desires to be seen and to be invisible, and depicts these in a way that is emotionally engaging. This tale of an unremarkable heroine's discovery of her supernatural powers is nearly as good as Margaret Mahy's "The Changeover" - and that's saying a lot! The book appeals not only to teens but also to older readers who remember what it felt like.
