I have been an Agatha Christie fan since I was about 10 years old. Recently, I decided to read all of her books, not just the famous ones. There are many I'd never heard of, including this one. Unfortunately, I can see why this book is not on par with the others. I didn't like it that much, although I was entertained enough to finish. I'm not a fan of Hastings. He was great in The Mysterious Affair at Styles, but his shtick wore quite thin early on in the short story collection Poirot Investigates. I just couldn't stand him here. The plot was convoluted and over the top. Christie's works sometimes challenge reality, but this one was just too much. Too many coincidences, few compelling characters, and a weak reveal. I did like the competitiveness between the Paris detective and Poirot, but that was a small part of the story. Poirot is always charming though, but I don't think this will be a re-read for me. (less)
