Afin de se sauver et de protéger ceux qu'il aime, Jamère a dû rendre les armes et se donner corps et âme à la magie. Tenu pour mort par les siens, il se réfugie chez les Ocellions où, regardé comme un Opulent, il bénéficie du soutien de la femme-arbre et d'Olikéa, mais se trouve en concurrence avec un autre magicien, Jodoli. Dans cette culture qu'il apprend à connaître peu à peu, il va devoir affronter deux questions vitales : comment empêcher la guerre contre les Ocellions et les Gerniens de tourner au bain de sang et, surtout, comment convaincre son double, Fils-de-Soldat, de l'écouter pour éviter le massacre?
