Moving and insightful children’s biography of the great American writer, E.B. White, by an award-winning children's writer.

White was a longtime writer for *The New Yorker* and other magazines, the editor of William Strunk’s essential guide to writing, *The Elements of Style*, and the author of three classic children’s novels: *Stuart Little*, *Charlotte’s Web*, and *The Trumpet of the Swan.*
Sweet did years of research for the writing and art, reading White’s letters and going through his papers. She pulls out many insights into White’s character that would be hard to find in any other children’s book. The book is full of the background of White’s writing, including his columns for The New Yorker, his nature writing for Harper’s, and of course his love of animals that led to his children’s books. While this was published as a children’s biography, any adult would appreciate it, too.

Some Writer! thoroughly engages the reader on all levels. The book is formatted in the fashion of a scrapbook. It includes original artwork of the author, old photographs, plus a plethora of information about the life of E. B. White. Highly recommended.

I fell in love with this book. It's filled with gorgeous collages, watercolour paintings, White's letters and quotations. Perfect for anyone, adult or child, who loves his books.

And it includes this lovely confession by White (which probably explains why I love him so much):
When he recorded the audiobook for Charlotte's Web, "it took took him seventeen takes to get through 'Last Day,' the chapter in which Charlotte dies. 'It's ridiculous,' he told the producer, 'a grown man reading a book that he wrote, and being unable to read it aloud because of tears.'"

I also found out that White recorded an audio version of the book, which I now must hear!

Charming biography, written for young people but to be enjoyed by everyone. Filled with photos, quotations, facsimile pages of White's manuscripts, and the author's wonderful original illustrations. I had not remembered (if I knew in the first place) that White was 46 when he published his first children's story.

This is Some Biography! The chapters tell the story of E.B. White while collage illustrations show us photos, mementos and excerpts from his writing in his own hand.

White truly was a gifted writer and it is no wonder that his book "Charlotte's Web" is considered by some to be the best children's book ever written.

Although this book is in the juvenile section of the library, adults should not hesitate to pick it up and read this wonderful book.

Fascinating story about E.B.White's life as a writer before becoming known as a writer for children. Lovely collaged illustrations combining photos and drawings. I don't think it belongs in the E BIO section, though, it's a book for the J BIO category. I highly recommend it for adults and for kids who have read his books.

A beautifully crafted book written with the clarity and style that White advocated. A window into the creative and personal life of a beloved children's author.

What a fabulous book! I could not put it down. Sweet does an excellent job researching E.B. White's life, her writing put me in Maine right beside him. An excellent biography for children filled with wonderful illustrations. He was truly a humble man.

I really, really liked this biography of E.B. White -- it's very well-researched, and Sweet strikes the appropriate note (for a book aimed at kids) at hitting the important notes of White's life without getting too bogged down in details. Bonus points for explaining The Elements of Style in a way this is more or less kid-friendly, too! The best part of this book is the artwork -- it's beautifully illustrated and she has worked in a lot of White's own words to go alongside her telling of his life in a way that I think works really well. If your kid is looking for an excellent non-fiction read, look no further.

Ah! This book is FANTASTIC! I loved every second of it. Take one remarkable man (E.B. White), plus equal parts extensive research and fabulous illustrations by the author/illustrator Melissa Sweet, and get one memorable biography. I loved learning the stories behind E.B. White's treasured children's classics (Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, & The Trumpet of the Swan), and learning about the inspirations from his personal life that lead to his successful career. A must read!

"I go by my instinct. I write largely for myself and am content to believe what is good enough for me is good enough for a youngster...."
