"It's a desperate race against the clock. Detective Demonbruen and his temporary partner, Jan Loflin, seek a missing six-year-old foster child. Demonbruen, himself a survivor of the foster system, is haunted by his own brutal childhood and the death of his father. He labors under a cloud of suspicion, determined to find the missing boy before it's too late. But are his motives really pure? His record is a minefield of red flags and question marks: how is a Birmingham cop able to afford a Porsche, a penthouse, and a summer cabin? Why does he have so much success with the petty criminals who form his network of confidential informants? And is there a legitimate explanation for the multiple excessive-force complaints on his jacket?" --Publisher.

At first I thought the story was a bit convoluted and dis jointed, but it comes together in the end. Page turning action. Well written.

A most imaginative, but complicated plot with lots of action and likable characters. The novel is a police procedural that involves the kidnapping of children all the while the reader learns more about the background of the main detective which has a bearing on the direction of the plot. The plot revolves around the idea that one's genes determine who one turns out to be - a good or bad person. It was an enjoyable read despite some story threads, fillers or diversions from the main plot about gangsters which ended up having a minor role in the major plot. Grant's main detective, Cooper, could be interesting enough for another novel.

Really short chapters are not really my bag and despite keeping up the pace, the story ends up being disjointed and unravelling from its thread. Nonetheless, a solid effort which is well above average for a procedural even given the amount of verbiage needed to create the back story for the protagonist.

I LOVE being the first to read a new book beginning a new series. Fast paced, multiple points of view; some of them hidden from reader to add extra oomph. I usually dislike short chapters, but it served the story well in this case. Really DID see the twist coming, but it was a dozy! Another flawed cop to add to my list. If you enjoy fast paced suspense, you'll really like this one!

The description of the conference room: ". . . always thought of the fourth floor conference room as a place where enthusiasm went to die." and ". . . he was half expecting to find a team of scientists under the table, searching for the black hole that sucked all the initiative and optimism out of the room's occupants."
