In this remarkable novel, set very early in Hitler's regime, Hegi funnels history through the perspectives and stories of individual characters. The reader gets a sense of how one society - educated, cultural, compassionate - can slip into a reality that's fabricated by propaganda and controlled by fear; how a surge of national unity can be manipulated into the dehumanization of a perceived enemy and the justification of torture and murder. But on this winter Tuesday in 1934, Thekla Koppen doesn't know, of course, how it will end. We do.

After reading Stones from the River a few years ago, I had high expectations for this book. While the book was beautiful and moving, I would not rate it as highly as the former. I did enjoy it, however.

Beautifully written. Hegli is a masterful writer at the peak of her ability.
