The graphics on the DVD front cover is a 2006 package design that shows the battle scene at the Arnhem bridgehead over the river Rhine. Unsure if it has better digital quality than the 1998 DVD version. A war epic spectacle with hugely popular film stars then and now, based on the massive Operation Market Garden in 1944.

The film that inspired the idiom that means an act of overreaching.

Great actors from the sixties and seventies, including Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Redford, and Laurence Olivier to name a few, World War Two, and an overflow of Lee Enfeild rifles? HECK YEAH!!!! End result: my butt was numb, my popcorn ran out one hour into this three hour slog, and i was barely awake. Great production values, and the cast is perfect, but it is SO LONG!!! I may come back to this film, and I hope beyond hope it is better the second time around.

This is a war classic and well worth watching, but it is also from an American point of view. Good acting, mostly historically accurate, but it also gives the impression that the failure of the operation was due to the British not moving with a sense of purpose.

In reality the operation failed for a variety of reasons, shared by the British and the Americans, and a vastly overambitious plan to somehow mount a major drive down a single road. It was nothing but a fantasy in 1944 and nothing has changed since then.

Recreates this complicated and tragic military venture with breathtaking sweep, historical accuracy and sober-eyed humanism.

Directed by Richard Attenborough, this is a 1977 British-American epic war-time drama based on the 1974 book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan.
The film tells the story of the failure of Operation Market Garden during World War II.
The operation was intended to allow the Allies to break through German lines and seize several bridges in the occupied Netherlands, including one at Arnhem, with the main objective of outflanking German defences in order to end the war by Christmas of 1944.
Although great actors take part in the film, it is more like a documentary without heartfelt dramatic episodes.
It seems historically accurate, but the film appears too long and too repetitive.

nothing special but the actors and actresses are worth seeing.

One of the better WWII movies in my opinion. Manages to capture the level of SNAFU, ass covering, wishful thinking of higher command in wars as well as the cost in lives and human suffering.

Director Richard Attenborough passed away yesterday. One of his best films is "A Bridge Too Far". This is the true story of an "Allied airdrop behind German line in Holland, and the Subsequent disastrous Battle of Amhem." Now the film has been called flawless and a masterpiece by many a film critic. Here on the KCLS web site two reviews gave it high reviews of 4 1/2 stars and 5 stars. The movie is from 1977 and I have not watched it in many years. I do remember being thoroughly impressed with both the script and the acting. The movie has an all star cast including Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Dirk Bogarde, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, James Caan, a young Colin Farrell. Maximilian Schell, Hardy Kruger and Liv Ullman. The battle scenes are as realistic as any film war scenes ever done. This is a Richard Attenborough masterpiece. KCLS has 7 copies and only 3 are checked out. I wouldn't hesitate to reserve your copy today! We can safely say that the man you did "Young Winston", "Gandhi" and "Cry for Freedom" knew how to make an epic movie.
9/2/14 Thanks to 15 or so KCLS patrons who have now put a hold on "A Bridge Too Far". I just finished again for the second time and found it even more entertaining than the first time. Again, if you would write your reaction to the movie, I would very much appreciate it.

Many memorable quotes in IMDb, thanks to its contributors. The funniest lines are from Lt. General Horrocks:

Gentlemen, this is a story that you shall tell your grandchildren, and mightily bored they'll be. The plan is called "Operation Market Garden". "Market" is the airborne element, and "Garden", the ground forces. That's us.
===
Now, I've selected you to lead us not only because of your extraordinary fighting ability, but also because in the unlikely event that the Germans ever get you, they will assume from your attire that they've captured a wretched peasant, and immediately send you on your way.
===
I'd like to think of this as one of those American western films. The paratroops, lacking substantial equipment, always short of food - these are the besieged homesteaders, the Germans, well naturally, they're the bad guys, and XXX Corps, we my friends, are the cavalry, on the way to the rescue.
===
Morning Derek! Glad to see someone knows where we're going!
