The time has come to stand against the night.

As darkness falls each night, the corelings rise-demons who well up from the ground like hellish steam, taking on fearsome form and substance. Sand demons. Wood demons. Wind demons. Flame demons. And gigantic rock demons, the deadliest of all. They possess supernatural strength and powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards-symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and mystery, and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile.

It was not always this way. Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms. Once, under the leadership of the legendary Deliverer, and armed with powerful wards that were not merely shields but weapons, they took the battle to the demons . . . and stopped their advance.

But those days are gone. The fighting wards are lost. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault.
Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past.

Arlen will pay any price, embrace any sacrifice, for freedom. His grim journey will take him beyond the bounds of human power.

Crippled by the demons that killed his parents, Rojer seeks solace in music-only to discover that music can be a weapon as well as a refuge.

Beautiful Leesha, who has suffered at the hands of men as well as demons, becomes an expert healer. But what cures can also harm. . . .

Together, they will stand against the night.

This was an interesting read. The world-building was very good. From the little hamlets and villages to the big cities, the author paints a vivid description of the location as well as the people. The main characters and their individual struggles, strengths, and weaknesses kept me interested and engaged. However, two-thirds of the way through the book, I still wasn't sure what the pivotal conflict was supposed to be or what direction the story was headed. This book is clearly setting things up for future volumes in the series but, in my opinion, didn't do a very good job of telling a complete story by itself. There was also a lot of sex in this book. Like, A LOT. Not in a pornographic or erotic way. But it seemed like no one was capable of keeping it in their pants with only a couple of exceptions, which irked me a bit. Married, single, old, young. Didn't matter. They were all angling to get it on at some point. There were also several scenes involving sexual coercion and assault. Definitely recommended for mature audiences.

Great start to a series. Story told from the points of view of three strong main characters, and throughout the book, I was just waiting for them to meet, and was not disappointed.

this is one of the worst books ive ever read. no, this isnt an exaggeration.

the writing is solid, the premise is intersesting. the characters are completely unbelievable. the authors concept of men and women is literally insane. he views women as these gossiping worrying rape victims (literally). and men as these innately evil rapists (literally). every man left alone with a woman is going to rape. the exceptions being the main characters of course.

you know when you're reading a book and you've become quite sure this character CANT die. hes just too important to the story? ya, all of them.

no idea how people can enjoy this book. gl if you're planning on reading it.

A great book. A very great book. Gets off to a bit of an awkward start in the beginning. "I won't fail him again." Who even says that? Other than that one bit, the rest of the book is a very entertaining read. Kept me up even later than normal.

In many ways this was a brilliantly executed novel. I stayed up late reading it when I should have been working or sleeping. For me that is usually the mark of a great novel. I really did like this book but I think it falls just shy of "great". First the good: Excellently executed. Even when I knew that a character had only one role to play, to help change the protagonist, and wasn't a true character I still wound up empathizing with that character. That speaks volumes. When you can say "oh, he's doing thus and such" and still feel empathy instead of just seeing a plot device you have a good writer at the helm. Also: the action is very well written he strikes an excellent balance between action and character development. The first 300 pages are an absolutely amazingly well told story. It was only towards the very end that I started feeling conflicted. The author includes rape--not itself a bad thing we need stories that explore this taboo subject-- but I think he gives it slightly short shrift. And that gives me pause. It's good to unpack taboo and dangerous subjects in stories, maybe the best way, but I feel he could have done a better job and taken more time with it. Really that's my only issue with the book. Other than that it's brilliant. But it's a big enough issue to lose a star in my review.
