SummaryAdd a Summary
Laura continues her education in order to become a school teacher to put her blind sister, Mary, through college in Iowa. However, studying is difficult when there is so much to do in the new town. Will Laura be able to get her licence?
One day at supper, Pa asks Laura whether she will accept a job in town helping to sew shirts, as the local bachelors do not have wives to do their sewing. Laura does not want to take the job, but decides to accept because the money will help send her sister Mary to a college for the blind in Iowa. She hates the work but never complains, and earns $1.50 per week for a total of $9.00 before the spring rush ends. The family that she works for runs a dry goods store, but they fight a lot, which makes Laura uncomfortable. Laura works through the month of June and is let go at the end of the spring rush.
