In Nancy Hustons new novel the charactersparticipate in a legal hearing of a highly singular variety, unfolding outsideof real time and place. They each give testimony in front of a mysteriousmagistrate who turns out to be none other than the reader herself or himself, presenting their respective and often contradictory version of the deathandlifeof a certain Cosmo.

Among the witnesses are a number of deadpeople, the novelist, a Lebanese cedar, a wisteria, a footbridge, and agorgeous Algerian knife (probably the murder weapon). Cosmo is the onlycharacter whose voice is never heard, but his portrait is gradually sketched outand coloured in by the stories and memories of others in his village.

Vivid and original, Nancy Hustons AnAdoration is a tour de force certain to resonate with fans of Chocolat and Amélie .

This reminds me of the French artsy movies that take place around a dining room table or in one long tedious scene in a salon. It is an existential exploration of human frailty and lack of control in life. Characters seem to be driven by events and innate traits and have no view of the larger society. The dialogue takes place in a court room ( where reader is the judge) and story line is disjointed as characters take turns telling their stories, interrupting each other and commenting on the other's rectitude .
Huston is a talented writer but she formats her stories into contrived plot lines that make reading a chore and unrewarding.
