Truly spectacular, "Mulan" initially lays a strong character foundation, but the drama degenerates into unbelievable action, albeit stunning in execution, well worth watching. The acting is top notch, thankfully in English, because subtitles would have further distracted from the frantic action. Lead actress Liu Yifei is a multitalented wonder, acting with a humble and quiet strength while embodying the universal power of women. In the special features, listen to her sing!
This film was ok. The use of English was a mistake in my opinion as the actors did not seem comfortable using it. It would have been better if they had spoken in Chinese with English subtitles.
I haven't liked Disney's recent remakes so didn't have high hopes for Mulan, but it ended up being the best by far. I loved how the plot doesn't revolve around a love interest and she learns not to hold back her talents. The special effects are phenomenal. Another commenter remarked on how the movie felt similar to a superhero movie, and I agree. Mulan would win in a match up against Iron Man. She doesn't need a fancy suit to perform aerial acrobatics.
I have never seen the cartoon version. This was a great find it shows the power and strength of women. Overall a good movie.
This is a very good movie. The mistake people made was comparing this version with the cartoon or the original version.
If this movie was called something else, it would have been better. The main actress is very good but the way they changed the story pales in comparison to the original IMO.
this version of mulan exceeded my expectations. beautiful costuming and scenery. enjoyed seeing jet li, gong li, and donnie yen. nice wire work and a scaffolding fight scene. the animated version is more kid friendly, but this was more appealing to my adult self.
Nice woman empowerment period piece in ancient China. Liked the movie but Mulan became less woman and more superhero as things moved along. Mulan had good "chi" which meant she had highly improved energy and health. In the movie I guess "chi" also meant she has gained some superpower like Supergirl as Mulan climbed, fought, and ran
far above the physical abilities of mortal men.
I wish they had made the movie closer to the cartoon. It needed Mushu and some laughs. Not worth it. Watch the original Mulan cartoon movie.
Colorful and full of action, the snippets of music from the original film made me nostalgic for the 1998 film. The beginning and ending (seeing Mulan with her family) were my favorite parts of the film and while there is great promise in telling Mulan's story of being true to herself and finding her 'chi' the movie doesn't deliver, spending too much time on action scenes.
A very good film The cast was excellent. The story is timeless. Bloody war scenes, lots of violence. Still, good!
This was a good fictional film worthy of all the stars available. However, a relationship is not effortless until its understood why together is difficult in different locations.
Let's talk about the 21st century, year 2021 ideals of freedom, how people opt-out of traditional labels in pursuit of more independent options or the support a person gets from family, friends and service providers who understand its good to share opinions.
They made Mulan into a boring super hero movie. There is no character development, no real drama, and worst of all no joy. This was probably the worst yet of all the remakes.
I appreciate the new perspective in this version of Mulan, but it is missing many important elements that made the animated version so captivating and endearing.
I was so looking forward to watching this movie of Mulan in theahers but the covid 19 happened and well you guys all know it was canceld it was not going to be in theathers anymore too bad but those who went to theathers for the other movies that were in before the pandme came there use to be a Mulan big carborad of her with her name and i did a picture of it well my brother did it for me when i saw standing by it so it is never gonna be in theahers anymore well thought they will bring irt back buut no only on Disney plus i don't have it but i have a simalor a to dsiney plaus its not netflix its something diffrent and i had a barbie doll of her but she wears a green dress witch she has in the cartoon i have barrowed the old one on dvd from you collectionyou had in 2009 and the 2 movie collection of it i really like the origial movie i hope this one will be good
The 2020 live-action Mulan is a remake of the animated film from 1998, with a larger focus on the true folklore of "The Ballad of Mulan". Though I applaud Disney for wanting a more historically accurate movie, my praise for the film ends there. This movie may share the same name as the 1998 version, but what this adaptation lacks is heart or any real emotion. The entirety of the film is very somber in atmosphere, which contributes in making the movie seem much longer in running time. In the animated, many important emotional moments were represented visually on screen, while in the live action much of it is explained and loses its impact on the audience. Mulan as a stand alone character is very bland, having no big character progression or growth due to the introduction of ch'i making it so she was strong from the beginning. She doesn't have any struggles or real character arc. Not to forget the action scenes were also overly stunted and easily took me out of the experience. Overall, Mulan is a war movie with no gore, made only bearable due to the Disney name attached to it. 1 Star @Ruby_Tuesday of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
I can see this movie is far more polarizing than I would have expected.
Personally, I was blown away by this movie and thought it was magnificent. The acting was wonderful, the message was powerful although it is possible some of the terminology is inaccurate and the cinematography and action choreography was brilliant!
I would rate this movie at least 4 out of 5 stars, without question.
The weakest Disney 'toon to be given the live action treatment is, ironically, one of the best. Niki ("Whale Rider") Caro's $200-million mega-production features an all-star Asian cast that includes such stalwarts as Gong Li (who gives the film's best performance), Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Jason Scott Lee, and everyone is terrific. Of all the movies re-routed to streamers in the Covid era, this probably suffers the most from being viewed on a small screen. Caro has made a film so visually dazzling and with such an epic sweep/feel that only IMAX could have done it justice. But it's so entertaining and well-made that it deserves to be seen in any format.
A big budget film about the ancient (4th to 6th century AD) fictional folk heroine of Chinese history. Enjoyed the excellent set design, film locations and stylish martial arts. The addition of the controversial supernatural force of feminist Chi (Qi) and the timeless moral elements (Loyal, Brave, and True) are also good, though could use more panache and better special effects. Curious that the actors are all internationally well known ethnically Chinese stars (Jet Li is unrecognizable with all the makeup), all seem to speak English without discernible accent, while the director, producers and writers are all white people.
Note: Pay special attention to the beginning of the film about Chi that is pivotal to this version of Hau Mulan's legend.
Being that this is just a movie, leave the imagination to be entertained...I thought it was very good in that perspective.
An uninspiring movie that offers little beyond visual spectacle. It steals many scenes from the animated original while failing to make any of those carry the same weight and meaning. It is no longer Mulan's mind, wit, hard work, and discipline that elevate this common village girl to the inspiring hero we know and love, but rather a magical version of "chi." Mulan no longer finds unique and innovative solutions to problems she encounters, instead relying on her chi to do acrobatic flips and outperform all her fellow soldiers. The moral from the animated version: success comes from learning to work well with others, and through perseverence and dedication. The moral of the new version: success results from simply being unique and special. Mulan's sole flaw in this new movie is that she isn't using enough of her chi. There isn't even an explanation about why Mulan has so much chi. This remake is a shallow superhero film not worth showing to children.
