“He was a poor man in a criminal justice system that treats you better if you are rich and guilty than if you are poor and innocent”
Anthony Ray Hinton wrote this book after he spent nearly 30 years on Alabama’s death row for a crime he didn’t commit. As a poor black man living in a country constructed on institutional racism, he was unfairly tried in court and put away for crimes that he had nothing to do with. He had an alibi, he passed a lie detector test, the bullets didn’t match the gun they found in his mom’s house, he was innocent. None of that mattered for 30 years.
Ray saw 54 men that he cared for walk passed his cell on the way to the electric chair, and would smell their flesh burn.
However, through all of his time on death row - he never lost hope.
He talks about how he used his imagination to travel the world and marry beautiful women, how he started a book club for the other inmates and found compassion and friendship with a man who was in the KKK.
Everyone should read this book!!!! So heart wrenching, frustrating but beautiful“He was a poor man in a criminal justice system that treats you better if you are rich and guilty than if you are poor and innocent”

This was my first Stephen King book and I wasn't sure what to expect - but I loved it and now I can't wait to read more of his work.
This was more of a thriller than a horror, about kids with special abilities who get abducted and forced to have experiments done on them in a brutal institution and how they come together to overcome their situation. It gave me stranger things vibes and I loved all the kids that were apart of the story. Over 500 pages and I was sad when it was over! Definitely recommend. This was my first Stephen King book and I wasn't sure what to expect - but I loved it and now I can't wait to read more of his work.
